Portree Isle of Skye Scotland

A key visit on our tour is the picturesque capital of the island, Portree. Opinions differ as to where the name comes from with some people claiming that it means the “Port of the King” following a visit by King James the 4th in 1540. Others suggest that it is from the Gaelic meaning “sloping harbour”.

The town is very pretty with many brightly coloured buildings, they are painted this way to try and ward off the evil weather spirits with rather mixed results.

We’ll make an extended stop in Portee so you can discover this pretty town for yourself. If the weather is kind to us then why not enjoy a picnic lunch and take in the lovely ambience of this bustling little harbour town.
